HOW IT WORKS

Lights low. Phone down. Listen.

    Find somewhere quiet. Stand in the open, away from walls. Lay your iPhone flat or hold it up in front of you, and keep still.

  2. 2

    It waits for the sharp stuff. Knocks, taps, creaks and footsteps that stand out from the room. Talking and the telly don't count.

  3. 3

    The needle turns to the sound. It works out where each sound came from and swings round to face it. Sometimes, something answers.

HEARS WHERE IT CAME FROM

Your iPhone's microphones work out which way every sharp sound came from. On iPhone 16 and newer, that includes behind you.

IGNORES THE CHATTER

Only short, sharp sounds that stand out from the room count, so a conversation won't set it off.

FEELS THE FIELD SHIFT

The compass sensor watches the magnetic field. When it suddenly jumps, an alert goes off and the needle swings towards it.

VOICES IN THE STATIC

Some nights it stays quiet. Others, a voice comes through after a knock. No two sessions play out the same.

Ask your question out loud. The box sweeps through the static, and when something answers, its words type out across the ticker one letter at a time. When the connection closes, you get a session summary: where the activity came from and what was said.

Does it really detect ghosts?

It detects real things: sounds, which way they came from, and shifts in the magnetic field. What made them is up to you.

What's the best way to use it?

Lights low, phone flat on a table or held up in front of you. Stand in the open, away from walls, stay still and listen.

Why didn't it react when I spoke?

It's listening for short, sharp sounds like knocks and footsteps. Voices and the TV are ignored on purpose.

Does it record me?

No. It listens only while the app is open, works everything out on your iPhone, and keeps no recordings.

Is it free?

Yes, the detector with its voices and messages is free. The Spirit Box is a one-off £1.99 in the app.
